School Psychologist

We are looking for a full-time School Psychologist to join our team at Inner City Youth Development Association (ICYDA).

WHO WE ARE

Inner City Youth Development Association (ICYDA) has worked with Edmonton’s marginalized urban Indigenous and other youth for over 30 years.  We have grown from our early years as a theatre program, creating scenes and plays about street life with street youth, to our present structure. We offer two wraparound programs that bridge youth from the street to a high school education. Our Youth Engagement Program contacts youth at the street level. We provide essential support such as counselling, housing referrals, food, bus fare, supplies, and other emergency resources. The resources, tools, and living skills we provide help youth make the transition to Inner City High School (ICHS) possible. While in school, students are supported by the youth engagement program and our staff of social workers and youth workers.

ICHS is an independent academic and arts-based senior high school accredited by Alberta Education.

THE POSITION

This is a full-time School Psychologist position that reports directly to the Executive Director or delegate. The School Psychologist is primarily responsible for working in an office setting or conducting meetings with agency staff or program participants. Within the inclusive education team, this position is responsible for coordinating and completing all program participant psychoeducational assessments and related staff and caregiver consultation. This position requires overtime work annually throughout September to December, with ensuing time in lieu instead of financial compensation. This frontline work requires staff to employ a strength-based, trauma-informed and supportive approach. ICYDA employs a collaborative and democratic structure of governance, featuring a Principal, an Executive Director and Director of Education as central to the small management team, leadership and initiative is encouraged and sought from all staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for the following duties:

Assessment and Evaluation

Working with office staff you will:

  • Work with inclusive education team to coordinate and conduct psychoeducational assessments of program participants designed to meet necessary Alberta Education inclusive education coding criteria.

  • Conduct comprehensive psychoeducational assessments to evaluate students' academic skills, social-emotional functioning, and behavior.

  • Work with teaching and youth engagement staff to administer and collect psychoeducational assessments and relevant observations of program participant functioning in the learning environment.

Report-Writing

  • Develop behavioural assessment reports for each program participant that interpret assessment results and provide recommendations for educational programming and interventions.

  • Work with the inclusive education team to maintain accurate and confidential records of assessments, interventions, and consultations in compliance with legal and ethical standards.

  • Ensure that behavioural assessments meet Alberta Education inclusive education coding criteria.

Staff Consultation

  • Offer consultation and guidance to teaching staff, youth engagement staff and caregivers on strategies for addressing academic, social, emotional and behavioural concerns in the learning environment.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to review program participant progress, discuss interventions, and help coordinate services.

  • Advocate for the mental health and well-being of all students within the school community.

Professional Development

  • Stay informed about best practices in the field of school psychology, traumatology and related concerns for urban Indigenous marginalized youth.

  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree in Educational Psychology or related field.

  • Registered as a psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP)

  • Strength-based and trauma-informed approach.

  • Deep understanding of the negative impact of colonization, including intergenerational trauma and related-transmission.

  • Excellent leadership and coordination skills.

  • Excellent organizational and collaboration skills.

  • Excellent computer skills – ability to work in Microsoft Office and other content management systems.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience directly related to psychological assessment (ideally emotional, behavioural, social and academic) and inclusive education practices.

  • Previous experience working with marginalized youth

  • Counselling skills and related training

  • Indigenous cultural knowledge
