About Our Food Program

When students eat better, they learn better.

Household food insecurity – a lack of money to buy enough healthy food – is a serious issue in Alberta. At its root, household food insecurity is an income-related issue. Food has always been a cornerstone of our support program because we believe no child should ever feel ashamed for being hungry. That said, many who we serve just don't eat regularly. Good food helps students learn and it promotes engagement. Sharing a meal is the glue that helps create and develop a sense of community and it helps build relationships. We’ve made a commitment to nutrition and we work hard to provide our students with healthy food choices. Meals and snacks are provided at no charge to students, thanks to the ongoing generosity of local sponsors and donors. With a full-time cook and a commercial kitchen in the school’s basement, we offer youth well-balanced menus that meet the needs of our school community.

The pandemic changed the way made and delivered students’ food; it did not changed the importance of a good meal.

On-Site In-Class (Pandemic Lunches)

When school reopened, our daily lunches were distributed to students for consumption by students, in-class as a cohort. We rolled the lunches to each classroom, distributed them and then picked up and returned the dishes to the kitchen.

Food has always been the glue, connecting students to our school community.
