April 12 - Albany Walmart Donates To Support Food Costs
Our thanks to Walmart Albany, in North Edmonton, for supporting Inner City with another $1,000 donation for food for youth in our program. This is the fifth year that Walmart Albany has donated to us! We appreciate Store Manager Ravindra and his team’s ongoing commitment, helping Edmonton youth help themselves!
April 13 — Quarterly E-Newsletter Sent
In April, we sent out our first Quarterly Update of news and information that encapsulated some of the key items that took place from January to March 2022.
A similar version of this newsletter will be sent to local social agencies to raise awareness of our programming.
You can sign up for newsletters on the footer of our website, on any page.
April 14 — Easter In-Class
Before we took a break for Easter, special cupcakes were made by the kitchen and some students in Social Studies helped make make pastillas, a famous Filipino sweet treat. Alexis, a newcomer from the Philippines, did a presentation in Social Studies on the colonial history of the Philippines and then led the class on making pastillas. The students made connections with Indigenous traditions and Filipino values, especially respect for elders and eating every part of an animal.
April 14 — Ward Councillor Anne Stevenson On Tour
On April 14, City of Edmonton's O-day’min Ward Councillor Anne Stevenson toured our facilityl. Inner City's COO Joe Cloutier led Anne Stevenson through the space and provided history and context regarding our wrap around approach to helping marginalized youth. Our thanks to Anne Stevenson for making time to visit and special thanks to the youth for the displays they created and for smudging with our guest.
April 27 — Spring Clean-Up
Students in Outdoor Education took some time to clean up around the school and community before the first spring rain. Come on green grass! Hurry!
April 29 — Indigenous Medicines at TELUS World of Science Edmonton
Students were invited to the Indigenous Traditional Room at Telus World of Science Edmonton for a workshop about Indigenous medicines. Work experience and Commemorative Garden Project students increased awareness and knowledge about plants used for centuries for their healing properties. This was important as we enter into the hands-on phase of our garden project. Outdoor Education and Indigenous Studies students are studying about Indigenous ways of knowing in their respective subjects.
Students received teachings from Elder Lynn then created their own unique medicine wheel gardens. They reported feeling fortunate at the chance to reconnect to ancient traditions and cultural practices.
We were joined by our partners from the Edmonton Native Plants Society and are grateful for the support we've received from the CEE Change Fellowship seed grant. And lastly, a big thank you to TWOSE and to our Elder for welcoming us and sharing her teachings as we continue our learning journey.
